Happy National Entrepreneurship Week!

National Entrepreneurship Week is February 19–26, 2011. What did you do to celebrate? UC Berkeley is hosting an Entrepreneurs Forum with Steve Blank on Thursday, February 24th at the Haas School of Business. Stanford University has an entire week of lectures, workshops, and panels planned for the occasion.

Last Friday, we were at the FEE Summit in Orlando with educators, policy makers, and entrepreneurs to discuss the Future of Entrepreneurship Education. Jonathan Ortmans of the Kauffman Foundation shared some salient points that encapsulate the importance of fostering entrepreneurship and celebrating it:

  • Net job growth occurs in the US economy only through startup firms
  • From 1980–2008, firms less than five years old accounted for new job growth
  • And my personal favorite – Venture capital is not an agent for inducing entrepreneurship; it is the entrepreneurship that creates venture capital

  • At True, our celebration of National Entrepreneurship Week is focused on education. In addition to attending the FEE Summit, Christiaan and I are actively recruiting on college campuses for our summer internship program TEC, as well as current seniors who are interested in working in early stage startups post-graduation. Jon taught a class at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business on investing during the 2009 economic downturn. He also spoke to the University of Miami School of Law’s Laws Without Walls program about bringing an entrepreneurial mindset to law practice and innovating therein. We also celebrated by funding two deals this week but more on that later.

Why this focus on education during National Entrepreneurship Week? Because education is extremely important to us – not only this week but all of the time.  Because there is an opportunity here.  An opportunity to learn from the insights of young entrepreneurs and to marry that perspective with the wisdom of seasoned entrepreneurs for a greater whole. The opportunity here is not only for mentorship but also for a mutually beneficial relationship.
