Gadget Lovers Rejoice, GDGT Launches!
July 1, 2009
“Gadget lovers rejoice- this is a social site where you can obsess over those tiny bundles of tech joy among others just as geeky as you,” Michael Arrington wrote this morning on TechCrunch when he broke the news of the GDGT launch. Since the news, the site has been overwhelmed with traffic (follow the story on Twitter @gdgt).
Here at True, we are rejoicing over the opportunity to work with Ryan Block & Peter Rojas in their new venture. At its heart, GDGT is a new kind of social media news site for gadget lovers. This is a market and product space that Peter & Ryan know extremely well, as they previously founded gadget sites Gizmodo & Engadget (acquired by AOL). The True Team has known and followed them for a long time. Peter & Om go way back to the early Red Herring days, and we have watched the duo continue to innovate in the blog and media markets for years.
Peter & Ryan are precisely the kind of entrepreneurs we love at True: they are creative, they are brimming with expertise, and they have an instinctive ability to invent the future. Ryan & Peter are a rare combination – editorial guys who can define a “product” and have a natural flair for the user experience. More importantly, they understand user expectations.
In GDGT, they have created something even more significant. GDGT is truly beautiful in its simplicity and power. As Ryan told the New York Times, “We view this as the final act. Gizmodo was the prototype. Engadget extended the idea. This could possibly be the last great gadget site.” We could not agree more: to us, GDGT represents the user-defined media.
Thank you, Ryan & Peter, for your faith and confidence in True. Congrats on your launch, and congrats also on building a phenomenal syndicate of angel investors. We are really honored to be a part of the GDGT team, and we look forward to the adventure ahead.
