True Ventures Featured on Mark Suster’s This Week in VC
June 21, 2010
True Ventures was featured in back-to-back week of Mark Suster’s This Week in VC.
In week 9, Mark Suster interviewed Mo Koyfman about Spark Capital, trends in technology, and the startup eco-system in NYC.
During Mo and Mark’s discussion of Spark Capital’s new website, they used True Ventures’ Service Recommendation page as a great part of a website – one that they both plan to copy in the short-term.
Then in week 10, Mark interviewed True Venture Partner Om Malik. The interview discusses True’s emphasis on being friendly to entrepreneurs, Om’s work with Red Herring and Business 2.0, and True’s funding of GigaOM in 2005.
Check out the week 9 video and the week 10 video at This Week in Venture Capital Online.
Thanks, Mark!

GigaOm Pro Launches
May 29, 2009
Yesterday GigaOm boldly launched GigaOm Pro. As detailed in his introductory post, Om has long envisioned this step as an essential piece in the evolution of the business & technology media landscape. Blogs have proven to be incredibly powerful in breaking news and stimulating conversation around a topic from thousands of thoughtful perspectives (Katrina, Mumbai, Sully’s Flight). In this manner, blogs have changed the media landscape forever.
But in our assessment, the potential of blog-based media is still in it’s infancy, and there remains tremendous opportunity for new media companies to go deeper on topics, create longer form, more in-depth discussions of important trends, and follow stories over time (much in the way that traditional journalism has famously done in news papers . . .think the Washington Post’s coverage of Watergate over multiple stories and months of doggedly pursuing a thesis, or their more recent series on Walter Reed Hospital – both examples top of mind as they were so eloquently discussed this past week at D7 by Katharine Weymouth and Arianna Huffington). Instead of just breaking the news, the best of traditional journalism has often change our world in long form and over a series of stories.
New media has this potential, but to succeed it will require combining all of the hustle and speed of today’s bloggers with new product attributes. Longer-form journalism online requires different packaging, an analytical perspective, significantly different form, and the fostering of a community engaged over the duration of a story or trend’s analysis. Most importantly, in order to produce and enable this type of discussion, new media companies must possess a culture that believes in journalism first, page views last.
We’re surely biased, but we believe GigaOm is incredibly well positioned for this opportunity. The company has successfully built and scaled a network of sites in our industry’s most significant sectors. The talent on the editorial team has broken important stories, established a credible voice in our ecosystem, and consistently produces fantastic analysis. Most importantly, GigaOm has been built on an ethos of journalistic integrity. For everyone who knows and reads Om and his team, it’s overwhelmingly clear that they are first and foremost journalists (and very good ones).
But there is more to do. A longer, more thoughtful conversation is waiting to be had, and GigaOm has just started it.
We’re excited to see Om and Paul evolve the media landscape with GigaOm Pro. Congratulations to the entire team on a really well executed product launch, and congratulations on so boldly evolving our industry.

Om Announces New CEO
September 2, 2008
Today, Om announced the appointment of Paul Walborsky to the position of CEO at GigaOmni Media. When Om started GigaOm, he had a much larger vision for the company than just his GigaOm blog, hence the formal company name “GigaOmni Media,” which is the official name. We believed then that his vision for a new kind of publishing company in the business and technology news segment was a big idea. At True, we are used to big things starting small, but watching a great entrepreneur create and build never ceases to amaze and impress us. Om is that entrepreneur at GigaOm, and he has flawlessly built a very real company in a very exciting market. The blog-based media industry has changed dramatically in the last two years, and Om has consistently bet on the right people, products, and markets to navigate this industry. Om’s steady hand, bold vision, and sheer force of will created this opportunity for us all.
The promotion of Paul is a great example of a Om’s talents and judgment at work. Paul joined us in June of 2006 as the COO of GigaOm, but his relationship with Om went back many years before his start date. Like most good business partnerships, Om and Paul’s relationship was built on mutual respect and a tremendous amount of trust built over many years of working together. Paul’s abilities were appreciated on day one. He took charge of the business side of the house, which freed up Om to pursue his passion: writing, editing, and new products. Paul fit well with the team, and his focus and skill moved the company beyond the start-up phase. As partners this past year, Paul and Om successfully built additional products and blogs for GigaOm: NewTeeVee, Earth2Tech, jkontherun, Ostatic, WebWorkerDaily. They started a conference business and have a few other innovative products in the pipeline. Paul’s promotion today will allow the company to further these developments and expand in other significant ways.
As an investor, today’s announcement is a CEO hire of the best kind. Today, our Founder Om promoted someone he knows well and trust very much. Paul shares the founding vision of the company but also brings the depth of experience and judgment that we need to take the company to the next level of scale and growth. He is a natural leader, and his people skills and genuine empathy have made the GigaOm family stronger and tighter.
We are entering the next phase in the growth and professionalization of the blogosphere. This next phase will be characterized by significantly larger business opportunities but also additional risk and uncertainty due to the changes in the adjacent mainstream media markets. We are now in the world of higher table stakes and bolder moves on a larger scale. Bigger risks, and bigger rewards. These are exciting times ahead, and all of us at True and GigaOm feel privileged to have Paul as our leader.
Congratulations Paul, Om, and the entire GigaOm team on this wonderful achievement.
Well done, GigaOm!!!
